Grief Has Many Doorways

This week, grief has been very close to my heart

Not the loud, dramatic kind, but the quiet grief that arrives in ordinary moments.

The absence you feel when a familiar presence is no longer there. The ache that does not ask for fixing, only acknowledgement.

Today, I want to speak especially to those who are grieving the loss of a beloved animal companion.

For many of us, our animals are not “just pets,” they are regulators of our nervous systems. Witnesses to our daily lives and sources of unconditional presence   when words fail or the world feels too much.

They sit beside us in silence and they feel our moods before we can name them. They offer comfort without explanation, and when they leave, the grief can feel disproportionate, not because it is too much, but because the depth of the bond is often underestimated or dismissed.

Grief does not measure love by species. It measures it by connection.

If you are grieving an animal, you are not being over-sensitive, sentimental, or dramatic. You are simply responding to the loss of a relationship that mattered.

Grief, in its truest form, is simply love with nowhere to go and learning how to let that love continue, differently.

Grief is not something to “get over,” it is something we learn to carry with compassion, whilst allowing it to reshape us without hardening us.

So, if today feels tender, let it be tender, if tears come, let them come. And if all you can do is breathe and stay present, that is enough. You are not behind, you are not broken, you are human, loving in a world where love leaves marks and that, too, is a kind of grace.
